The Bathroom Pact

Nashville, Tennessee – UnNatural Nashville Con

The rest of the night was spent talking about nothing and everything. We didn’t get much sleep. That feeling we had back in Oregon somehow made its way to Nashville and I think Easton and I were both holding onto it for dear life. It was like we were holding hands in a category five hurricane, the gale force winds ripping away at our connection, one tiny thread at a time, but we refused to let go.

That was the very definition of our new-found friend . . . relationship. We were just waiting for one gust of wind to knock us over, destroying everything.

I had no idea what the future, or hell, tomorrow would bring, but for the moment, I allowed myself to be happy. With Easton. I allowed myself to see the way he took me in. The way he lit up when we talked about the mundane things in life or the way he really thought about the important stuff. We’d been friends for so long, and yet, he constantly showed me new sides of him.

He snuck out just before sun up, leaving me with a sweet kiss on my lips and a heart full.

Later that morning, I got ready to head to the con when Mama stopped by my room. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”

I turned from the mirror, brushing on the last bit of foundation Mama bought me and nodded. “Yep. Text me when you get there, and I’ll bring you your pass and photo vouchers.”

She leaned against the doorframe. “You doing okay?” Her eyes narrowed, and she adjusted the apron around her waist.

I nodded, capping my lip balm after I swiped a layer on my lips. “Y . . . yeah.” God, I sounded so guilty.

She gave me that all-knowing look, her reflection watching me in the mirror and I shrank in my seat. You know the look, all kids with a secret did. “What’s going on with you and Easton?”

Did she see him sneak out? Did she hear us? Oh Lord, she’s a midnight snack eater. How could I have forgotten that?

“Nothing’s going on, Ma. We’re good,” I said, and it felt good not to have to lie.

“Didn’t seem like that to me.”

My nose wrinkled as my alarm reminded me to leave in order to get back to the hotel in time. My to do list before the fans invaded the con was long, so much to double check. And triple check. “You’re looking too much into it,” I rationalized. “We’re friends.”

“Who sleep in the same room?” She challenged with a smirk.

“We . . . we didn’t . . .”

“Oh?” she questioned, her eyebrows jutted up into her forehead. “So, the sheets on the couch just magically made themselves exactly the same as it was last night, or did he and Bennett have a sleepover?”

Okay, I panicked. Full-on wanted-to-vomit panicked. “Um.”

She lifted her manicured hand. “No need to explain.” She winked. “I understand.”

Does she? Because I sure as hell didn’t.
